permits, indictments, and DUI convictions.

http://www.brbpub.com/pubrecsites.asp#county
Cross-indexes addresses and phone numbers for the city and some of the surrounding area. Also lists professions for some residents. It’s in the
news library.
Similar to the City Directory. Does a larger area than the City Directory, but doesn’t list professions.
This phone directory is available through the public library. You’ll need your library card
to use it. Seems fairly timely, allows you to do reverse searches and, for some listings, has estimated home
price and salary info.
Has a reverse phone directory.
Also has a reverse directory and the names of neighbors.
Find overseas phone numbers with this tool.
One of the few online directories that doesn’t require you to know the state in which
the person lives.
With this Postal Service database, you can type in an address and find the whole nine-digit zip code in a flash.
We have old copies of the Fredericksburg phone book and the City Directory. The news
librarian can also search Accurint for past addresses in other states.
E-mail Directory – Bigfoot
http://www.bigfoot.com
None of the e-mail search engines are very good, but Bigfoot seems more comprehensive than
others tested.
Local personalities are sometimes invited for live chats on our company’s Web site.
Questions from readers run the gamut; during one chat, the mayor was asked when he’d last attended a kegger!
Check under CommunityLIVE.
WEB SITES
Web Site Linker Lookup http://www.google.com
Want to know who links to a particular Web site? In Google, type Link:(Web address) in the search box to see what sites have set up links to that Web page. Can be interesting when looking up politicians.
Web Site Owner Lookup http://www.whois.sc
Use it to see who owns a Web site. Usually has their address and phone number, too. Requires free registration.
Accurint and Nexis are two of the only ways to find relatives and spouses (unless they happen
to be mentioned in newspaper stories, wedding announcements, obituaries, marriage license lists, etc.).
Unfortunately, Accurint and Nexis don’t identify what the relationship is (although Nexis may tell you the
spouse’s name). Nexis also has divorce and marriage records for a few states, not including Virginia.
Alumni Search Site
http://www.classmates.com
Online alumni directories may yield a little information (usually just the year graduated),
but they include only people who have registered themselves. Plus, you have to know the name of their school to
search. If you know what college he or she went to, check that site, too. You never know when he or she may
have been written up in the alumni notes.
27 states (but not Virginia) provide this information to NEXIS.
Local Obituaries – Check Tark for these. Search with this format: john w/2 doe, in case we
used a middle initial in the record. For names from before the start of the electronic archive, check the Hodge
index in the Virginiana Room at The Central Rappahannock Regional Library – it goes from the 1700s to the
present day.
Look up individuals by name or Social Security Number to find out when they died and where
they last resided.
Confirm whether a celebrity is still kicking with this no-frills but trustworthy site.
Agent Locator http://www.WhoRepresents.com
Need to know who represents Garth Brooks or Harrison Ford or Meryl Streep? Try the
WhoRepresents Web site.
Has very short biographies of celebrities.
This Central Rappahannock Regional Library database has tons of people and information.
You’ll need a library card to use it.
Amazon Authors
Lookup
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ats-query-page/002-2592079-6436016
Use to search for books written by an author. Does not have any information about authors.
For that, use a database such as the Biography Resource Center available through the Central Rappahannock
Regional Library (www.librarypoint.org). The public library has also collected info about some local
authors.
American Medical Association Directory of Doctors http://www.ama-assn.org
The AMA’s home page lists doctors across the country. Information includes specialty, medical
school attended and year of graduation. (Note: doctors may change their own data in this system).
The Virginia Dept of Health Professions Web site tells you if disciplinary action has been
taken against a doctor.
Experts’ Links http://sunsite.unc.edu/slanews/internet/experts.html
Experts in almost every imaginable field are listed on Web sites linked to this page. It was
created by the News Division of the Special Libraries Association.
Inventors Database http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html

Lawyer Search Engine
http://lawyers.martindale.com/xp/Martindale/Lawyer_Locator/Search_Lawyer_Locator/loc_search.xml

Similar to above.
This site shows who’s in trouble with the Virginia State Bar.
Lobbyists Search Engine http://www.commonwealth.virginia.gov/Lobbyist/database.cfm
Search it by lobbyist name or organization name.
Pilot License Lookup
http://www.landings.com
The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) Civil Aviation Registry allows you to look up
pilots and plane owners.
Licenses - Health Professions
http://www.vipnet.org/dhp/cgi-bin/search_publicdb.cgi
Through the Virginia Dept of Health Professions Web site, you can search to see if someone is
a doctor, nurse, podiatrist, masseuse, funeral director, veterinarian, dentist, or other health professional.
Has a list of other states’ license databases.
People who work as contractors, architects, real estate agents, home inspectors,
cosmetologists or in a number of other fields must be licensed in Virginia. You can look up licensing
information in this database by name or by zip code.
Virginia State Employee
Directory http://www.employees.state.va.us/directory-search.cfm
Has staff members of any department within the
state, including such agencies as VDOT and Mary Washington College.
The State Corporation Commission
Site http://www.state.va.us/scc/division/clk/diracc.htm
The SCC is the official licensing body for companies in Virginia. You can scroll through an
alphabetical list of companies (keyword searching isn’t possible). This is the best place to look for basic info on local companies, although the records usually include little more than the establishment date, the owner's name and address.
The BBB keeps a nationwide database of complaints against companies. They also list their
members on this site.
Search the Securities & Exchange Commission’s Edgar site for filings by publicly-owned companies (those traded on the stock
exchange).
Assessments
http://www.vamanet.com/cgi-bin/MAPSRCHPGM?LOCAL=FRE
Assessments for the City of Fredericksburg and Caroline County are available on this site.
Searchable by owner or address.
Shows you recent sales and nearby sales, with sale dates and prices.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics
http://www.bls.gov/oes/home.htm
The BLS site gives average earnings for most professions.
The Securities & Exchange Commission’s Edgar site has salary information about top executives
within companies that are traded on the stock exchange (which, unfortunately, isn’t the case for very many
companies in Fredericksburg).
Ecomp has salaries for top executives at publicly traded companies.
Shows executives’ compensation in the 990 filings for charities/non-profits. You have to know
the organization’s name; you can’t search by the executive’s name. Requires free registration.
Estimates compensation for many professions. Searchable by zip code.
It has limited info about defendants in some localities’ circuit courts. Circuit courts cover
serious criminal cases (felonies) and divorces.
General district courts handle most traffic violations and misdemeanors.
A news librarian can give you the password to search this database. It covers most of the
country’s federal-level civil, criminal and bankruptcy courts.
Virginia Sex Offender Database
http://sex-offender.vsp.state.va.us/Static/Search.htm
Virginia State Prison Inmates
https://www.vipnet.org/cgi-bin/vadoc/doc.cgi
Lets you find out where someone is incarcerated in Virginia (searches for inmates in state
prisons only).
Current and former federal prison inmates are searchable with the Bureau of Prisons database.
Has a great state-by-state list of what’s online for free.
Not as comprehensive as the list above, but okay in a pinch.
